Fuse Beauty Tip:
A healthy and beneficial fruit, the avocado serves as a useful ingredient in homemade face creams and other beauty products. It possesses light sunscreen capabililties making it an efficient cosmetic ingredient. It also contains vitamins A, B, E and G which lend to its excellent moisturizing benefits for skin and hair. Making your own face cream and other beauty products from avocado provides you with a truly rewarding endeavor for improving your appearence without the need for harsh chemicals found in some commercial products.
INSTRUCTIONS: Add 1 tbsp. of avocado butter to a glass dish. Follow up with 1 tsp. of avocado carrier oil. Pour 1 cup of floral hydrosol to the bowl. Choose any type of hydrosol to add fragrance and extra benefit to the recipe. For face cream, floral hydrosol of helichrysum or even tea tree oil are soothing and good for toning. Microwave the bowl on high for three minutes. Add 1 tsp. of borax to the bowl and mix thoroghly.
Microwave a bowl containing 1 tbsp. of beeswax for three minutes to melt.
Mix the oil and water solution with a hand mixer as you drizzle the melted wax into it. It will immediately emulsify into a thin frothy cream. Continue to beat the mixture on high for five minutes. Pour the cream into a jar or lotion bottle and leave it uncovered until it cools to room temperature. At room temperature it will be a thick white cream.

Mathematicians Figure Out What Makes Women Beautiful.
After studying the movements of women for years, finally we get scientific confirmation of what we're seeing:
Researchers at Cambridge University in the U.K. have figured out exactly what makes a perfect swivel-hipped walk with "a more angular swaying and bounce to the hips." The mathematicians got out their slide rules, calculators, blow-up dolls and binoculars, scientifically determining the perfect ratio of waist to hips.
Their results? The closer that ratio is to 0.7 (waist measurement is 70% of the hip measurement), the sexier the swagger. And guess who has that exact ratio? Jessica Alba.
Other babes of historical importance were also mentioned, such as Marilyn Monroe, with a target ratio of 0.69, making it almost to the level of perfection of Jessica, but not quite. This 0.7 ratio translates into a waist of 25 inches and 36-inch hips, making that tick-tock walk look absolutely perfect. But the ratio is not necessarily related to measurements or weight just the difference between those two measurements.

Acne - what is the deal?

which forms an occlusive plug, and bacteria may get trapped under the
plug. The bacteria involved in acne lesions actually feed on the sebum. Blackheads
are plugged pores, and the plug causes the pore to dilate. Whiteheads form when bacteria are trapped at different levels under the plug. Inflammation and rupture of the pore may occur causing red bumps and cysts. More severe lesions heal with scarring.
Due to testosterone, acne tends to be more severe in males. Adult acne develops later in life and may be due to hormones associated with childbirth, menopause or stress.
Control of acne is an ongoing process. To optimize outcomes, therapy must be tailored to the patient, balancing effectiveness, tolerability and side effects.
One tip is to apply topical products over the affected area-not on the pimples themselves.
The topical preparations work by preventing new lesions and can actually irritate an existing acne lesion, making it appear more red and inflamed. If acne has not improved in 2-3 months, the treatment needs to be changed. The treatment recommended by your dermatologist will vary depending on acne type.
The Commercial Trends these days imply that dirty skin causes acne. The suggestion is that the skin needs aggressive cleansing, particularly

What really causes acne? There are many factors that contribute to acne. Heredity undoubtedly contributes in most cases. Hormones are the basic inciting factor. At puberty, the hormonal surge causes the oil (sebaceous)
gland to grow and begin to secrete more oil (sebum). The oil makes the cells in the pore sticky
with a gritty scrub or
rough implement. Fruit products seem to be the scrub of choice. This philosophy is misleading and leads to frustration, not to mention skin trauma. I compare rubbing a granular cleanser over an acne lesions to rubbing a soccer ball over a golf hole. It just does nothing but injure the tissue around and on top of the pimple. Many non-

prescription acne lotions and creams help mild acne. However, benzoyl peroxide does contain some peroxide which can cause bleaching of fabric and overt-the-counter products can be very irritating to the skin. I like Neutragena Clear Pore because it can be used as a wash or a mask. I have found it less irritating than other over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide products.
Chemical exfoliants such as salicylic acid and glycolic acid are helpful to loosen the plug. Salicylic acid and
glycolic acid has been shown to be more effective for blackheads. I like Neutragena Oil Free Acne Wash. Topical
glycolic acids are in many face lotions and toners.
Tretinoin (Retin A) is a good treatment for mild and moderate acne,
Other hormones such as spironolactone can also treat acne in women. Adults with acne may also have rosacea or a stress hormone component to their condition.
I occasionally use the IPL laser to calm down inflammatory acne. I have had great success with the laser treatments in combination with standard therapy for moderate and severe inflammatory acne. I also use the laser on my pregnant patients with acne.
For oil control a new product is available called OC Eight. This product controls oil on the skin without making it dry.
Maintenance is the core component of acne therapy. Safe and effective options do exist. In general a simple topical or two will control the lesions. If over the counter medicines fail, see a board certified physician.
but can be iritating. I recommend starting tretinoin twice per week and working up to every night as tolerated. The oral relative of trentinoin is isotretinoin (Accutane/Sotret). Isotretinoin actually “remolds†the pore and shrinks the oil gland. In many cases, isotretinion provides a permanent cure for acne. It is a miracle drug for many, but patients must
understand the side effects.
Antibiotics are commonly used to treat acne. They are used as an antibacterial agent from the inside- especially for deeper lesions. Many antibiotics also have an anti-inflammatory effect that decreases redness and swelling. I like to use antibiotics in severe acne to get it under control until the topicals take effect. I do not use antibiotics indefinitely.
Birth control pills may significantly improve acne and may be used specifically for the treatment of acne.

This is a common issue and sometimes there is and easy way to help this. The chances are you are fair skinned, and /or have fine texture with some broken capillaries.
You may also be using products that are too harsh and are irritating your skin, making this worse. I have had many clients who come to me for treatment of rosacea (a condition which is exacerbated often by heat, spicy foods and alcohol), when in fact all they have needed is a correct home care routine and/or a few treatments without steam! Please see last months magazine for a full explanation and guidance on sunscreens.
Meanwhile a few tips: Drink half your body weight in ounces of water per day, turn on your A/C in the car for a few minutes before getting in after returning to a baking parking spot! Ensure outdoor sports activities take place before 10AM or after 4PM, and wear adequate protection for the neck and chest - not only the face.
If a more aggressive approach is in order a photofacial series for redness and broken veins, and/or a prescription strength cream are available on site with a doctor.
Some of my tried and tested favorite products for this are the Image Vital C line, Image ageless lightening serum, and Colorescience primers and mineral SPF 30 available in 3 shades.

Indian Summer is an ambiguous term and the reason for its name is obscure. Historians describe ceremonies of ancient Southwest Native Americans who considered "IndianSummer" a gift from the Gods.
To long term San Francisco Bay residents, Indian Summer has a special meaning. Generally falling between mid September and mid October, those warm, glowing, hazy days provide a thaw from mark Twain's "coldest winter, " (a summer in San Francisco). The frigid damp evenings are replaced by sultry Santana winds.
The days are mild, warm, and hazy, with a golden glow that makes time slowly dissolve into reverie. That same glow makes the ocean shimmer and dance, celebrating the gifts from the sun. The world lazily stretches and yawns like a cat on the window sill.

I'm STILL working on all that! :) It is by far MUCH harder, in my opinion, to maintain than the actual losing part. I wish someone would have told me that part when I started my journey. The best answer I can give you is you have to choose to live differently, choose to let go of the old habits and garbage that weighed you down both physically with extra pounds, but also mentally, emotionally and spiritually. I try hard to live in the moment, relish how great my body feels at this weight, how much better I feel about myself, and in doing so, it helps me not want to indulge in overeating, or skip workouts or eat high calorie non-nutritious food on a regular basis as I would have in the past because that's how I rewarded myself when I felt bad...or was bored...or some other ridiculous reason.

Volunteering in your community!
As a grown up and having been privileged enough to
have a good and safe life, I felt that I needed to give back
to the community somehow. I wanted to set an example
for my daughter as well so I found an organization
named National Charity League (NCL for short).
NCL was started in 1925 by a small group of Southern
California women who made baby layettes for the poor
and delivered food for the hungry. While doing so, their
daughters often tagged along and by 1938 so many
daughters were participating that they formed their own
group and called themselves Ticktockers. The name
came about as they counted the minutes they were
sitting around waiting for their mothers watching the
clock slowly go tick tock. In 1947 the groups united to
become the first mother-daughter philanthropy
organization and renamed themselves National Charity
League. It was then that the mothers took on the name
Patronesses while the daughters kept the name
Ticktockers. NCL has a National Council Board of Directors which represent the organizations five regions and one hundred twenty six local chapters throughout the United States. NCL continues to carry out its mission to provide service to its communities while fostering the mother daughter relationship. Through the volunteer work today, NCL hopes to make the world a better place.
The mission statement of NCL is: To foster mother-daughter relationships and philanthropic commitment to community service, leadership development and cultural experiences.
As my daughter Mita and I were part of the Acalanes Chapter of NCL for 6 years (it starts when the daughter is in 7th grade), we learned a lot about our community and did MANY fun philanthropies. After hundreds of hours of community work for various organizations we both finally graduated from NCL this year when my daughter graduated High School. NCL graduation is a big deal as to thank everyone for their commitment to the community. A big party followed all the wonderful daughters speeches and that was the perfect way to end these fantastic years.
