"I grew up with skinny body and architecture digest as first reading materials; visiting artist's studios and antique shops as my field trips during my childhood days. Like to draw but could not draw from imaginations- can put a decent ensembles on clothes, accessories but not sewing/making them. I have a very critical taste that some might think too lofty, egad ... What to do when you were the only child for 14 years and all you knew was the adults.
After 20 years of not using my artistic talents I married and toned down the way I dressed according to society norms, did what most mom had to do - raised the kids.
I wanted something out of the box especially after the transition from marriage to single life. Saw an ad for contemporary women in the paper, interviewed, enrolled in classes, went on a competition and lo and behold I have a new career - Freelance Model/Actor.
During the course of the years, I found catwalk experience exhilarating. Alas, there is still career and excitement in life after 40. I could be creative at the same time know a bit better what I want to do with my career path -
Modeling made me come out from my shy box and be comfortable with my body and props my self esteem to be more confident when dealing with others. By exercising, taking care of appearance, eat well and of course praying helps a tremendous lot - it makes me a more well rounded person.
Once you are stable and confident - the universe just open doors of opportunities to you. "

Tom Ford's Fall 2011 Beauty Collection includes nail polishes, skin care, brow pencils, lip glosses, liquid and stick foundations, brushes, lipsticks, eyeshadow palettes and much more.
Tom Ford spoke about the collection: "My first collection for this fall [2011] arrives in stores in the US and Europe in October. I name all of the colors myself and someone just asked me what my two favorite names of colors that I had designed where. One is a great red lip color called Lost Cherry and the other is a dark nail polish called Bitter B*tch. Naming colors is always fun and great names can really help certain colors catch on."

Versace's latest fragrance, Yellow Diamond, may bring up thoughts of royalty and riches but the brand has a younger generation in mind for its latest scent. According to WWD, they're aiming the fragrance at an audience that is "...more hooked into fashion, and always looking for something new -- those who love different products and personalities and bold colors -- transparent and brilliant like a yellow diamond," said Giovanni Sfariboldi, president of Versace's fragrance licensee partner Euroitalia.
The fragrance, with Abbey Lee Kershaw as its face, was inspired by something that Donatella Versace found in her jewelry box. "I was inspired to create my Yellow Diamond fragrance by a precious yellow diamond ring I have. The jewel has always stimulated a feeling of brightness, sensuality and energy, and this is what I set out to capture in this new glamorous, charming and feminine floral fragrance," said Versace.
The bottle, which features a transparent yellow cap and resembles a gemstone, is filled with a pale yellow juice. The scent is comprised of pear sorbet, neroli, bergamot and citron from diamante head and will be available beginning in September.

Lychee Bubble Tea
Olive Oil Soap --
Kate Moss
Launched in September!
Savor's bar soaps are made from the finest raw materials, sourced from a family-owned business here in the San Francisco Bay Area. They've been making soap products for almost 50 years! The fragrances come from all around the world and include essential oils and manufactured fragrance oils, and Savor offers both melt and pour and cold process soaps.
Kate Moss can basically do no wrong - the stunning supermodel has been on everyone's minds since her wedding this summer, making little girls everywhere (and big girls) lust after her wedding dress, day, and good looks.
Moss is finally pairing up her supermodel knowledge and fashion know-how with a beauty brand (we don't count her being the spokesperson for countless beauty spots), working with Rimmel on her very own range of lipstick. The line, which will feature seven high-shine colors ranging from red to plum will be encased in a matte black packaging and embossed in Kate's signature in red on the side.

It is no secret that beauty brands like to go dark for fall, but how dark is dark?
For YSL Beauty, it is the Black Collection, a line of alluringly dark beauty products that are certain to create a bold new beauty look. Interestingly, the Black Collection doesn't feature black hues. Instead, you will find a lineup of dark colors think green, burgundy red, smokey grey all with just a hint of black.
The Black Collection includes an eyeliner pen, six new mascara shades, three new nail polishes, and six cream eyeliners. Our faves? The nail polish collection, which features metallic that will be perfect for the party season. The Black Collection will be available in the coming weeks.
MAC Colourizations Collection for Fall 2011 includes Pro Palette Eyeshadow x2, Technakohl Liner, Zoom Lash and Brushes. Are you tired of using same eyeshadow colors everyday? If yes, then try out Pro Palette Eyeshadow x2 which includes 8 dazzling shades. Spice up your eye makeup with these vibrant and flirty eyeshadow shades. Technakohl Liner comes in six alluring hues including Graphblack, Photogravure, Purple Dash, Auto-de-blu, Uniform and Jade Way. MAC Zoom Lash mascara is must-have for every fashion-conscious woman. It amazingly darken and lengthen the lashes. This MAC makeup collection also offers two makeup brushes to complete a variety of makeup looks.

Adults who use sunscreen daily can drastically cut their risk of developing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. A new landmark study done in Australia found that daily application of an SF 16 sunscreen to the head, neck, arms, and hands reduced melanoma incidence by half in study participants. More than 16,000 white Australian adults between age 25 and 65 were studied for more than a decade. The subjects were divided into two groups, one told to continue using (or not using) sunscreen as they always had, the other given careful instruction in proper daily sunscreen application. The subjects were monitored closely through daily self-reports of sunscreen use, as well as collection and examination of all sunscreen containers
they used. Only 11 melanomas developed in the daily sunscreen users, versus 22 in the control group. The control group had a 50 percent reduction in the occurrence of melanomas. In addition, invasive melanomas were reduced by 73%.
The trial's findings are the first to provide strong direct evidence for a reduction in the incidence of invasive melanoma after regular application of brad-spectrum sunscreen in adults.

BRITAIN BANS indoor tanning for those under 18. Thanks to the United Kingdom's new Sunbeds Regulation Act, children under 18 years of age are now banned from using ultraviolet tanning devices in Great Britain.
UV radiation is a proven human carcinogen, and the World Health Organization includes UV tanning devices in its list of the most dangerous cancer-causing substances. People who start tanning before the age of 35 increase their risk of developing melanoma by 75%. Tanning bed users are also 2.5 times more likely to develop squamous cell carcinoma and 1.5 times more likely to develop basal cell carcinoma.
Melanoma rates have tripled among Britons ages 15-34 years in the
past 30 years. UV tanning devices have become increasingly popular over the same period. In some areas of the UK, around 50% of the 15-17 year old girls have tanned indoors.
In the US, where tanning is regulated by the states, debate in regulating indoor tanning continues. The Skin Cancer Foundation, along with several other organizations, has testified before the FDA on the necessity of limiting the use of tanning beds.
REMEMBER: "All tanning is dangerous. A tan indicates that the skin's DNA has already been damaged." Perry Robbins MD President of the Skin Cancer Foundation.

Dear Maddie,
What is the difference between using your recommended home care products and drugstore, department store, or multilevel sales brands?
- Sarah P., Orinda, CA
Sarah,
The short answer - you get what you pay for as with most things in life!
It all comes down to the quality and percentage of active ingredients. Many over the counter lines spend millions of dollars in all forms of promotion and packaging to entice you to purchase and convince you of their worth. Professional product lines put their money in results producing ingredients, and in training professionals like myself, - not in promotion.
In some recent research I did, I was shocked to find and eye cream from a well known department store line for $400! When I asked the sales assistant why I needed this, she could not tell me why those ingredients were going to benefit me or how my needs were different from someone half my age! The buzz words are peptides and stem cells; ingredients I know to produce great change over time. However they are expensive, and the percentages needed would place those over the counter brands into a price range consumers would not accept. Therefore they play up labeling, use just enough to mention it on the label, but not enough for an effect, - then fill with cheaper plumping ingredients.
In short, get the right products specific to your needs, with the right usage instructions and you will prolong and maintain your treatment results! Next month look for my take on professional skin peeling treatments for fall!

As the leaves begin to lazily drift down, autumn signals another season gone, another season about to arrive. The passage of time is still a mystery, no matter how long we've lived.
One thing that is no longer a mystery is the concept of living much longer than our grandparents, or even our parents. Technological advances have provided many additional years of life's rewards and challenges.
The very pertinent question becomes, what to do during those extended "golden years". My suggestion is to re-invent oneself. The Hindu religion explores reincarnation as a transition of the soul from one body to another. Obviously, we have very little control over that process. But, in some measure, we can reinvent ourselves in the same body. Aside from the obvious methods of diet, exercise, self-awareness exercises such as meditation and spiritual investigation, we can also take a look at what we've learned so far. After all, what's the point of living for a long time, if we haven't learned anything along the way?
In my experience, the advancing years do bring a sense of patience with people, places and things. The years teach me that patience really is "a virtue" even if not always readily available. Eventually, I've learned that "flying off the handle" does absolutely no good, while almost invariably creating a worse situation. The years also teach that what I thought was so important really wasn't.
Going hand in hand with patience, empathy becomes a more significant word. Having made many similiar mistakes in the course of living, it becomes somewhat easier to understand and commiserate with those of us who encounter difficult challenges.
Invention is described as a discovery, so to re-invent is to re-discover. Hopefully, we can re-discover that incomparable feeling we had as kids, waking up on Saturday morning realizing there was no school, and the day seemed full of infinite possibilities. Perhaps, with a little effort, we can re-discover that sense of wonder as we experience the sights, sounds, smells and touches of this exquisite mystery called life.

tossin' and turnin'
It has been said by many that a full eight hours or more of sleep is necessary to stay healthy. Not only does lack of sleep give us those hard to hide dark rings under our eyes, but a full nights rest can actually help you lose weight. When we get less than a desired amount of sleep, our metabolism gets thrown out of wack.
For many less than six hours of sleep can cause a "lack of sleep" hangover. This feels so much worse than a night of drinking, and can effect your ability to concentrate.
Insomnia seems to be the chief complaint when it comes to lack of sleep. Here are a few tips that may help you catch more zzzz's instead of catching the "hangover".
If your problem is falling asleep, and counting sheep does not help, skip using any sort of electronic device an hour before sleep.

Even something as small as a cell phone can produce enough light to fake your brain into thinking it's daytime. Even the tiniest glow from an alarm clock could be the culprit. Try draping a towel or tee over your alarm clock and block out the light!
For those of you who have trouble staying asleep...Are you guilty of falling asleep with your TV on just to wake up a couple hours later? While we sleep our hearing is more sensitive than when we are awake. The slightest little sounds may be okay while drifting off to slumberland. But, midsleep a louder sound may come across your television or radio in turn causing you to wake. It is best to keep the TV out of the bedroom, if that is not possible, turn on the timer.
In this day and age...life is always GO! Go! Go! Without proper sleep you're not goin' anywhere!

Oh yeah...I got a million of them! The plain truth is until YOU figure out what the best idea is for you, mine don't necessarily add up to anything that can benefit YOU!
Why do YOU want to lose weight, and why now? Seems like an obvious question, but very truthfully answer that for yourself...not the "pat" answer you tell everyone else, but what is your heartfelt motivation to change your life, your health, your destiny!
When you have the answer to that, take a SMALL, but significant step to alter and change ONE bad habit you know contributes to your being overweight. Example: You know that you eat too late at night then collapse into bed with a full stomach. So for the next week, change that, try and eat at an earlier hour, and finish eating for the day by 7:00 pm (allowing your digestive system to "rest" for 12 hours minimizes stomach bloat, helps you feel hungry to eat breakfast, helps you sleep better and wake more energized when you don't have food putrifying in your stomach as you sleep). Be as consistent as you can for seven days with just that ONE habit. The next week, try and change ONE other thing (weaning your self off Starbucks? taking a walk after dinner?) If you follow this idea, in a month you will have successfully altered 4 bad habits. This is about changing your lifestyle, not just changing for the moment or a current motivation. It may seem slow and difficult, but if it sticks for life, it will make all the difference in the long run.
Dear Nina,
I have been desperately saying I want to lose weight, but I don't know how
to take the steps to really make it happen.
Any ideas?
35
Welllll.....not to be cliche, but "A journey of a thousand steps begins with one!"
Point being, ya just gotta start. Each day you spend working towards your goal of weight loss, is another day lost of giving up and/or contributing to the problem and allowing it to escalate.
See, it's about perspective...when you look at that scale, or in the mirror and you think how am I ever gonna lose all this (as I did at 250 lbs.!), you have to take it a day at a time. Once you have embarked, and taken that first step, realize that you are moving in the right direction and that's a victory in itself. When I started, the weight came off relatively slowly, but consistently. I could barely move my body and do the exercises my trainer made me do. I would cry in exasperation and wonder if I'd EVER be just a "normal" size. I forgot what it felt like to not be in pain and to move freely and without effort.
In moments of deep discouragement, I would choose to have the perspective that at least I was trying, I wasn't just giving up, or doing nothing, I was being proactive, and although I still saw all the weight, and all the work I had yet to do, I had to focus each day on knowing I was moving in a positive direction.
The idea of losing all this weight, 40lbs, just seems overwhelming. How can
I get started?
Got a Question for Nina?
Click on the "?" to send her a confidential email.
It all seems so dreadfully unrealistic, doesn't it?! First of all, if you have already begun changing your diet and exercise patterns and are now facing your first holiday season, go easy on yourself. Plan ahead as much as possible, eat a light (healthful) snack before heading out to all those parties so you're not tempted to graze and overeat. Check out your options and be very selective, get what you want, then STEP AWAY from the buffet! Go on the other side of the room, engage yourself away from all the food. Park far away in the shopping mall so you have to walk, take stairs, anything to increase physical activity within the daily running around you have to do anyway during this time of year. Finally, if you are just now embarking on trying to change your lifestyle, this is not the best time to start. It can be a recipe for disappointment, and though you may want to start adopting some healthier habits, go for it! Just don't place unrealistic expectations on yourself that make you feel like a failure when you can't carry them through.
How do I manage to stay on track during the stress of the holidays, temptations at every event and trying to fit in exercise when I barely can get Christmas shopping and everything else done?

Fashion this season takes us on a surreal ride. While we appreciate the Art of Design presented by Vicktor & Rolf we can move to the romantic flow of fabric shared through the eyes of Mike Vensel.
Whether you choose to embrace the WHOLE of Red this season draped with sensuality and power or wish to experience its individual identity with just a dramatic slice, Red will always help you find the WOMAN within.
"Fashion is a trend, style is a Choice."
