"Audrey Hepburn has been an idol of mine for many years. She suffered from self doubt for most of her younger career, but became more beautiful in my opinion on the inside and out as she aged.
Starting this second Model/Acting career last summer (in my 49th year) was both humbling and empowering.
Fashion is for everyone not only for the under Thirty, 5'11'' ladies!
I have auditioned for several roles usually for print work or commercials and as with everything, you win some and you lose some - but you learn something every single time."

Producers Notes rt
As all fashion enthusiasts know, a decade never gets left behind. It always reappears in new design interpretations and the best of it can be appreciated forever. The Fifties and Sixties incapsulate something transitory about clothing.
It was a time when the changes in lifestyle and social dynamics created a hotbed of opposing looks. As always with Opposition and Stuggle comes Greatness!

What's the best way to wear
Barely-There lipstick without looking washed out?
Think pink instead of taking the word nude too literally, as lips are flushed not flesh tone Avoid shades with brown or beige undertones, and choose a pinky taupe or copper instead. The most flattering shades are close to your natural lip colour, with a subtle shimmer or shine.
We like the rosy coral and gold ribbon in Nars Beautiful Liar $24 narscosmetics.combecause its barely there but flattering, like fancy lingerie for the lips.

5. Don’t stray too far from your usual look
I’m all for playing around with makeup, but this isn’t the day to do it. If you want to try a smokey eye for the first time, save it for your bachelorette party!
6. Bring oil blotting sheets with you
I always include these in my bridal touchup kits. It’s a long day and most people get a little shine, but these papers keep it at bay. I prefer them to powder because powder tends to cake up after multiple applications.
7. Use a foundation and eye primer
The number one question brides ask me is “Will my makeup stay on all day?” With good primers, it will!
8. Consider using false lashes
For weddings, I prefer flares (individual bunches of 6-8 lashes) to full strip lashes. Because you can put on as few or as many as you want, you’re able to control how natural or dramatic your look is.
9. Use waterproof mascara
This may seem like a no-brainer, but brides have a million and one details to worry about, so this can get overlooked. It’s a big day, and if you get emotional, you want to make sure your mascara doesn’t show it.

Among the Stars lft
The most beautiful women in Hollywood all currently sport the new, fuller face furniture: Sienna Miller (as seen on a recent cover of U.S. Vogue), Jennifer Connolly, Kate Winslet, Madonna and Natalie Portman all have brows that are very thick, very straight and very defined.
This trend started on the catwalks last autumn, with models sporting brows almost worthy of Frida Kahlo (the artist who looked as though two slugs were nestling above her lashes).
In the 1930s, the biggest stars, from Marlene Dietrich to Carole Lombard and Greta Garbo, all had a perfect, very fine arc painted on, quite high on the face, giving a permanently surprised expression.
The theory was that the woman's place was to be decorative and overgroomed, not in the workplace, which clearly was the realm of men.
Brows grew thicker during wartime, when there was no time to spend hours drawing on one's face and peering into a magnifying mirror.
The last time we saw brows as thick as the ones we're seeing now was back in the early Eighties, with actresses such as Brooke Shields and Mariel Hemingway sporting huge great caterpillars above a relatively unadorned face.
The Brooke brow was a welcome departure from what we had seen in the Sixties and Seventies, when an overplucked arch was all the rage, suggesting women were happy to be treated like little girls.
In the mid-to-late-Eighties, supermodels, from Christie Brinkley to Cindy Crawford, followed Brooke's example, sporting commendably bushy brows that gave out the clear signal that these women were not to be messed with.

Dear Maddie,
The thought of the upcoming holiday parties, with my face and neck on show for all my colleagues and relatives to see, is causing a panic! What do you suggest? (I am on a tight budget and would like a one time treatment with minimum down time.)
Lori C,
Castro Valley.
The leaves are falling - a chill is in the air! This is a sign to "ready" our skin for the holiday season and to repair from the summer sun. It is time to really look at ourselves and decide what we want to improve or treat a little more aggressively over the winter months. The key here is to set realistic goals -
Do you have uneven sun damage pigment?
Are those expression lines a little more defined than you would like?
Do you have an uneven texture?
Is there a dullness, lack of brightness?
Are your pores enlarged?
Are you using the same home care products as last winter?
I am guessing yes is the answer to most of these questions! Now it is time to schedule that appointment - which resurfacing peel is right for your skin? There is nothing more effective at treating all of the above than a peel treatment, some flaking and shedding is GOOD! Without this cell renewal your products just sit on the surface of your skin, and your collagen production which decreases as we age is given a BOOST like no other treatment!
A 45 minute treatment - a few days of flaking, improvement in 10 days which continues for months!
The key post treatment is - nourishment. The right ingredients in the right quantity at the right time.
Don't be the turkey this holiday! Contact me for a consultation.........
Enjoy looking your best.

Your Body Shape and Health
by Laura Dayton
Marilyn Monroes oozing sexuality is a big reason why the hourglass figure is still sought after by women and coveted by men. It is actually a rather rare body type, and it may not be the healthiest.
Determining Body Type
Everyone has heard of Apples and Pears, but the truth is that most women fall somewhere in between. One of the best indicators of body type is your Waist-to-Hip ratio. Calculate this by taking your waist measurement in inches, and divide it by your hip measurement in inches. For example, if you have a waist of 23 inches and hips that are 31 inches, your WHR is .074 (23 divided by 31 = .074), which is a Pear, or possibly Hourglass.
Pear Shapes: These are normally a WHR of .8 or less with small or average bust. These women carry most of their weight in their hips, and may live longer than Apple-shaped women who carry fat in their abdomens. Pears have a lower risk of heart disease.
Typically, a WHR of 0.7 or less is associated with higher fertility and lower rates of chronic disease. Michelle Obama is a classic Pear.
Hourglasses: These are usually Pears with a WHR of .8 or less, with a large bust within two inches of their hips. Women with Hourglass figures can have 30 percent more estrogen than other women. As a result, they are three times more likely to get pregnant, according to a study byHarvard University. They share the same longevity of Pears, but may have a slightly higher incidence of breast cancer.
Apple Shapes: Studies indicate that nearly 50% of all women are Apples. Their WHR is .9 or larger. The body type is characterized by slim hips and thighs with larger bellies and flat behinds. Apples like Drew Barrymore arent necessarily overweight. A woman with a waistline larger than 32 inches is at an increased risk of diabetes and heart attack. Most women will eventually become Apples due to estrogen loss. Authorities recommend Apples to consider HRT at menopause, and throughout their lives to keep their weight under control through healthy eating and regular exercise.
Rectangles: This shape has relatively equal measurements between the bust, waist and hip, and a WHR of .9 or higher. Rectangles are usually more competitive, physically stronger and better equipped to handle stress. Classic examples are Keira Knightley or Gwyneth Paltrow.
Shape Shifters:For the most part, the shape youre born into is the shape youll be. Often, women dont realize their real body type until their 30s when their bodies have matured. You cant change your shape, but you can change tendencies, especially belly fat.
Enjoy a low stress lifestyle, Yoga and/or meditation, drink plenty of water and dedicate yourself to a consistently high level of cardiovascular exercise.

buzz
THE BUZZ
Social unrest can also be viewed in fashion trends, such as the tie-dyed, homemade T-shirt of the sixties, and the flamboyant platform shoes of the seventies.
Some of us remember an era when women would'nt consider going downtown without their gloves, and the men at the baseball game were wearing suits and fedoras.
The styles of the post war fifties reflect hope and positive energy bursting forth after years of war. In the fifties clothes made the man, and Coco Chanel had already affirmed if a woman wears the right dress people will remember the dress and the woman.
Space does'nt allow a complete review of all the categories on my list. The discussion of Duisenberg automobiles and bottles of Lafette-Rotheschild Champagne must be reserved for another time. Vintage music is something requiring much more discussion because the music provides a sound track for each of our biographies.
Perhaps the most common thread in vintage categories is the undeniable level of craftsmanship that lifted certain commodities to the level of true classics, things of beauty that are a joy forever. There is also the glow of remembering that special song in that special moment with that special, someone, (you know what I mean.)
Vintage, representing the best of a period long gone by... When we describe something as vintage, we refer not only to the quality of that something, but to the feeling projected by it.
Vintage portrays the social climate of a time period, allowing us a glimpse of the dreams and concerns of those who've gone before us. Its fun to consider vintage categories, because it inevitably requires making lists of things that have grabbed our attention.
My vintage list is:
1. Clothing
2. Cars
3. Wine
4. Music
5. Jewelry
6. Furniture
7. Art
8. Books
9. Architecture
10. Boats & Airlplanes
Clothing provides a vast number of vintage considerations. The length of a womans skirt was once considered a clear metaphor for the nations economy. If the skirts were short the economy was thriving. Long skirts portrayed more conservative, ridgid times.

The Way You Walk
Not so many years ago girls were taught how to walk and I think it was quite right. A lot of women today should go back to school again and learn the art of walking well because it is extremely important.
Many women have been known not for their beauty, but for their charm and their only charm was the way they walked. It is not easy to walk with dignity and lightness.
Some people have a natural gift for moving gracefully. But if it does not come naturally to you then you have to cultivate the art. It is ridiculous to wear beautiful clothes and then slouch along or sit in a slovenly manner so that they quickly become creased like rags.

Holiday Stress
is much easier and more fun when physical and mental fitness is optimized. If you're not sure how to go about beginning a workout program, or what to do about your increasing forgetfulness, we have suggestions for you.
You're unlikely to stick with a type of exercise that you hate. Even if you choose the right exercise, you will still occasionally have to overcome inertia or fatigue to stick with your program. If you actually dread exercising, you're probably trying to do too much or you've picked something that's not a good match for your fitness level or interest.
1. Yoga
When I was working full-time, yoga was the only exercise class that I could look forward to and enjoy at the end of a workday. While it is great for building strength and increasing flexibility, it is also slow-paced and low-impact, which is probably why it's a favorite senior fitness activity. Most of us can benefit from yoga's emphasis on breathing techniques. Yoga classes typically include relaxing music; some even use aromatherapy. Class usually closes with wonderful relaxation exercises. If you are out of shape, it's easy to work at a low level. If you are in good condition, you will still find some of the poses challenging.
2. Take proper precautions.
Although it's important to warm up and cool down at all ages, it becomes even more important as one ages. In fact, seniors should extend their pre- and post-exercise routines. You should stretch even before a low-impact exercise such as walking. If your exercise is interrupted by a conversation with a friend or neighbor, warm up again before returning to your previous speed or level. Muscles get stiff quickly. Other precautions that seniors should observe include drinking plenty of water and avoiding outside exercise during extremes of temperature.
45
FP 5
3. Dress appropriately.
Frugal seniors sometimes skimp on clothes and shoes for exercise. Having shoes that support the foot is essential for weight-bearing exercise. Shoes should be replaced often, long before they begin to look worn-out. Although expensive clothing is not necessary for most types of exercise, you'll want to wear clothing that doesn't bind or chafe. Fabrics that wick moisture away from the body are good for both hot and cold weather.
4. Exercise even when you're not exercising.
One of the benefits of an exercise program is that it builds body awareness. As you are more in tune with your body, you'll be more aware of your posture even when you're not exercising. Learn about the causes of poor posture and correct them. By walking tall, sitting tall, keeping the shoulders back and holding in the abs, you'll be getting a workout even when you're not working out. You'll also find ways to beef up your daily routines, by working on balance while washing the dishes, or by taking stretch breaks while working on the computer.
5. Keep a positive mental attitude.
One of the greatest obstacles to fitness is the tendency to get discouraged when you slip. It's much easier to miss a workout if you've already skipped one or two, because you quickly adopt a defeatist attitude: "I'm never going to be able to stick with this." Instead, concentrate on the times you did make time for exercise. If you're working toward a moderate level of fitness, you'll find that working out is harder after a missed workout or two, but it's not nearly as hard as starting from scratch. Praise yourself when you are faithful, and forgive yourself when you're not.
6. Have fun.
Part of making exercise fun is choosing something you like doing, but other factors also make exercising a pleasure or a burden. Some people love exercising with others. Others like the quiet meditative aspect of working out alone. Don't be afraid to arrange your exercise the way you like it. Some enjoy listening to music or audio books while exercising; others prefer just listening to the birds or being alone with their own thoughts. Most experts recommend working out early in the day, but if you have more energy in the evening or at night, allow yourself to make that your special time.

But of course! Rather than look at this as just a quick fix, think of it as a jump start to life change that will keep you looking your best beyond your daughter's wedding. Every 10 lbs. you drop is a dress size, so you have maybe 10 to 15 lbs to lose in the next 5 months...very doable if you're willing to stick to it. Set a goal of 5lbs a month. That gives you grace if it's slower...or you may be surprised it drops much faster. First, go for a cleanse, a fast of some sort, that gives you a fighting chance against cravings. You will also have immediate loss, particularly in your stomach, that can help motivate you. Each week, drop one bad habit and add a healthy one. Be realistic, not drastic. For example, no second helpings, take the stairs not the elevator. Eat fresh foods, not processed, as much as possible, drink water instead of diet drinks. Avoid carbonation, limit or omit alcohol for this span of time. MOVE YOUR BODY! Put music on and dance, walk your dog, stretch and do yoga. Reward with massages and/or pampering, NOT food. Have a journal and calendar to track your progress and struggles and so you can tick off the days toward your goal and see tangible accomplishments. You will feel great and proud that you did what you set out to do!
Dear Nina,
My daughter is getting married in July, of course I would like to look
my very best. I am currently a size 12/14 and would like to be closer to a size 10, any quick fix?
49
Nina
Dear Nina,
What has it been like for you personally with such a drastic change in
your body size?
Oh my....it's been radical! It took me 2 years to finally get my brain to accept the body I saw in the mirror as REALLY me. Initially, I continually would shop for the wrong (bigger) sizes and be confusedwhen I tried them on and they hung on me. I still feel trepidation when I try on my size...like I'm going to pull them up over my hips and rip them to shreds!
Exercise helps tremendously for making the mind/body connection and getting in tune with my strength and fitness. Until, I lost the weight, maintained, and lived in this new body...I never realized how sick, uncomfortable, weak and unhealthy I was because I had no reference point. I simply lived in my old body with an acceptance of this is how it feels to get old, things slow down, stuff hurts, etc. I'm still aging, but at least now, I can negotiate through the process
with better health and manageability.

Click on the "?" to send her a confidential email.
Congratulations! As you begin your new life, this is a perfect
opportunity to change some of those destructive habits that have put you in this position of being overweight. Figure out what motivates you, new recipes to try new dishes with your new husband? new Zumba classes to get you moving and having fun? walking buddies that share your goal of being healthy and will share your company while you walk and talk? You need to find the plan that works for you. Key word there: PLAN...have a very specific goal and time line. Write it out and how you are going to accomplish it on a day to day basis. Keep your focus and surround yourself with people who encourage you towards that goal. Starting with replacing some of your meals with supplemental high protein shakes, can help jump start your loss. I don't recommend depending on that for long, as you need to learn to eat proper portioned meals. It can help keep you satisfied as you minimize your intake and your appetite as your stomach shrinks from consuming less. DON'T starve your self. Eat less, but eat consistently and make GOOD choices. Drink water, minimize or omit caffeine and alcohol. MOVE YOUR BODY everyday, stretch, walk, dance, make that mind/body connection. In no time, you'll be feeling and seeing the results of your efforts, just stay the course!
Dear Nina,
I am getting married in the Fall and would like to shed 30lbs any ideas?

Strength Training is every bit as important as cardiovascular training, in part because loss of physical strength is so connected with the markers of ageing and with reduced energy capacity. On average, we loose nearly one-half pound of muscle mass per year after the age of forty in the absence of regular strength training. Since the mid-1980s, researchers at Tufts University have produced extraordinary data about the effects of strength training among the elderly. In a study published in the Journal of American Medical Association in 1990, for example, a group of nursing home residents ages eighty-six to ninety-six underwent a strength-training program. All of them had serious chronic diseases and most of them used walkers or canes. After training just three days a week for eight weeks, the subjects increased their average strength by 175 percent and their balance by 48 percent.
More recently, one of the Tufts researchers, Miriam Nelson, launched a controlled study of women aged fifty-five to seventy who had previously done no exercise at all. After a year, those who continued not to exercise lost 2 percent of their bone density and suffered an 8.5 percent loss of balance. Those who undertook a three-day-a-week strength-training program gained 1 percent in bone density and 14 percent in balance. More broadly, strength training has also been shown to increase overall energy, speed and metabolism and strengthen the heart.
The growing consensus among psychologists is that muscle loss, more than any single factor, is responsible for both the fragility and the diminished vitality associated with old age. Loss of bone density, for example, vastly increases the incidence of osteoporosis, which makes the bones far more fragile and affects some 25 million Americans.

By the age of ninety, one in three women will have suffered a fracture of the hip. Remarkably, more women die as a consequence of hip fracture than from breast cancer, uterine cancer and ovarian cancer combined.

Wisdom of Rumi lft
Jalalud'din Rumi
is one of the worlds most revered mystical poets. During his lifetime he produced a prolific range of inspiring and devotional poetry which encapsulates the sufi's experience of union with the divine. These timeless classics have enjoyed a renaissance in recent years, as Rumi has become one of our most popular poets. Although Rumi was a Sufi and a great scholar of the Quran his appeal reaches across religious and social divisions. Even during his lifetime he was noted for his cosmopolitan outlook. His funeral, which lasted 40 days, was attended by Muslims, Jews, Persians, Christians and Greeks.
Rumi was born in 1207 on the Eastern shores of the Persian Empire. He was born in the city of Balkh( in what is now Afghanistan), and finally settled in the town of Konya, in what is now Turkey. It was a period of remarkable social and political turbulence. The 13th Century was the era of the crusades; also the area where Rumi lived was under constant threat of Mongol invasion. The great upheavals Rumi faced during his life is said to have influenced much of his poetry.
Rumi met many of the great Sufi poets. For example, as a young boy he met the Sufi Master, Attar. Attar is said to have commented about Rumi.
"There goes a river dragging an ocean behind it."
However the most important turning point in Rumis life was when he met the wandering dervish Shams al- Din. Shams was eccentric and unorthodox, but was filled with heart - felt devotion, that sometimes he couldnt contain. Shams appeared to be quite different to the respectable and prestigious scholar, (as Rumi was at that point.) However Rumi saw in Shams a divine presence. This meeting and their close mystical relationship was instrumental in awakening Rumis latent spirituality and intense devotion. It was at this point Rumi abandoned his academic career and began to write his mystical poetry.
Rumis poetry is wide ranging and encompasses many different ideas but behind all the poetry the essential theme was the longing and searching for the union with the divine. Rumi was himself a great mystic. His outpourings of poetry were a reflection of his own inner consciousness. Ironically Rumi said that no words could adequately explain the experience of mystical union. Yet his words are inspiring signposts which point towards the divine.
In his poetry Rumi frequently uses imagery which may be unexpected. For example although Islam forbids alcohol, he often describes the sensation of being drunk and intoxicated with ecstasy for his beloved." Here drunk implies the bliss of the divine consciousness. Love is a frequent subject of Rumi's poems, descriptions of seeming romantic love is an illusion to the all encompassing pure, divine love. Metaphors such as this are common to other Sufi poets such as Omar Khayyam, Hafiz, and Attar.
Rumi's poetry is so widely appreciated because it has the capacity to uplift our own consciouness. Reading the words of Rumi can awaken in ourselves, our own spiritual self.
53
Wisdom of Rumi rt
"The original words of Rumi are so deep, so perfect, so touching, that when one man repeats them hundreds and thousands of people are moved to tears. They cannot help penetrating the heart. This shows how much Rumi himself was moved to have been able to pour out such living words. - Hazrat Inayat Khan

Paul Cavaco notes: “
Vera loves clothes beyond loving clothes; she loves everything that has to do with clothes. This is not a make-believe love here; it’s the real thing.” And speaking of love, Wang is perhaps best-known for her romanticism. Whimsical and feminine without looking saccharine, luxurious materials get worked and finessed with a singular flourish. She'’s also a history buff who, in the past, has looked to everything from czarist Russia to ancient Rome for inspiration.
